The Band was formed in 1991 in Los Angeles after the split of their earlier groups, and quickly wrote and recorded a
12-track demo tape. This featured one of their best singles "Bullte In The Head".: an early wakefulness, with the
sneering accusation "Believeing all the lies that they're telling you/Buying all the products that they're selling you!".
The demo(which went to sell over 5000 copies) pesuaded no less an organisation than Epic Rcords to sign them.
In July 1992 Rage Supported the first show by Porno For Pyros. This was an important gig to be seen at, with the
cream of LA's media players present- and the band's slamming performance went down a storm.
RATM's self titled debut album- probably the most influential record - was released on November 6, 1992 and became
an instant classic. With its intimidating opener, 'Bombtrack', and the apocalpytic death knells of 'Bullet In The Head' and
'Know Your Enemy', It was feral, exciting record.
After a tour with House Of Pain in March 1993 and a few months of preparation, Rage grabbed the headlines in July
with their appearance on the third Lollapalooza tour by walking on-stage naked (except for PMRC painted on their chests and
their moths sealed with duct tape) and standing, sullen and silent, for a full fifteen minutes.
In january 1997 a special Radio Free LA concert took place, featuring a band composed of Morello, de la Rocha, Flea
of RHCP on bass and Porno For Pyros drummer Steven Perkins.
After tours with U2 and Wu Tang Clan, Morello caused headlines by being arrested at a March Of Conscience rally against
the Guess Company, which alleegdly uses sweatshop labour in Asia.
May 1999 saw a Rage track,'No Shelter', appear on the GODZILLA soundtrack and recieve a nomination for Best Metal
Performance at 40th Annual Grammy Award.
Album Number Three - Targeted closer to home, with the title of "The Battle Of Los Angeles" which was
released in late 1999. And like its predessor, entered the charts at the top spot. However, it seemed that Rage's momentum
has deserted them to a certain extent: perhaps the public had tired of their relentless activism.During a performance by saccharine
moppet Britney Spears of The Rolling Stones' 'Satisfaction' at the MTV Video Music Award, Bassist of RATM Commerford lost
all his patience and started to climb 15 foot high column.Later, was ejected from the venue by security guards.Shortly, after
this incident, despite Morello's promise of a live Rage album, Zack announced his departure from the band.
In December 2000 a covers album , "Renegades" was released, featuring takes on work by astists such as
Devo, Bruce Springsteen and Afrika Bambaataa. However most fans percieved it as a stop-gap release and sold only moderately
well.
